How do you use the BreakOut Pedal?
Simple. Plug the jack into your phone, then simply plug in a guitar/keyboard/mic and plug out to an amp like any average pedal.
You can’t just plug a microphone into the iPhone or iPad?
Nope. Apple uses a different jack that allows input and output at the same time and doesn’t recognize when you plug in a standard mic (or guitar for that matter).
Does the BreakOut Pedal work with Headphones?
No. The BreakOut Pedal is designed in Mono to integrate perfectly with effects pedals and guitar/keyboard amps. This means you will only hear sound from one side of the headphones. If you are looking for a stereo output for recording use or practicing with headphones, standby for our new BreakOut Cable and Interface in design now!
How does the BreakOut actually work?
The iPhone and iPad don’t have a separate in and out, like your MacBook Pro for instance. Both the input and the Output both go through the Headphone input using a special 4 conductor TRRS jack (Guitar Cables are TS, and Stereo Headphones are TRS). This facilitates the the EarBuds with a built in Mic that come with the phone. The BreakOut breaks these signals out into the box, resolves a few signal and voltage issues along the way, and allows you to plug straight into your amplifier.
How does the bypass switch work and what is it used for?
The bypass on the BreakOut is a true bypass so when it is not in send mode your signal passes through with out any signal loss. This allows for you to use it anywhere in your signal chain for any performance, and only have to run sound through your iPhone or iPad when you need to.
Do you guys ship NSP internationally? I live in ______ and can’t wait to explore new sound worlds with the BreakOut!
You are in luck. We ship everywhere. We can ship first class which is the cheapest option, 6-12 days, but it does not have tracking. The other option is express, around $40, 2-5 days depending on where it is going, and this does come with tracking.
I would really like a stomp switch instead of the toggle….is that possible?
Yes! Our custom shop has been building a few of these pedals for friends that were interested. If you are interested, contact us at the email below and we will try and make it happen for you!
What software does the BreakOut work with?
We love the creativity and new ideas that are coming out almost every day for the iPhone and iPad. Because of this, The BreakOut is designed to work optimally with all audio apps for the iPhone and iPad. We are constantly searching low and high, far and wide for new apps and new sounds to experiment with (see our sounds and links page for some of the apps we are playing around with these days). Because there is such a variation in gain inputs and how apps are designed, we made the BreakOut with an input level knob that can give you the most control and most flexibility. Often new apps will take a bit of experimenting with to find the sweet spot and perfect input level on the pedal and output level on the phone for optimum sound.
How about Latency?
Latency is different from app to app, depending on the app’s design. It generally depends on how processor intensive the effect is. In RiotFX for example, the more pitch shifting effects you layer, the more you experience a little latency. But all in all, it is actually quite good, and only getting better with each processor update in each new phone.
